Manslaughter charge dropped in beating of Native woman

Authorities in Manitoba dropped a manslaughter charge against a storeowner who was accused of beating Geraldine Beardy, who was from the Garden Hill First Nation.

Authorities say Beardy was attacked in the store after she allegedly tried to shoplift a $1.49 can of lunch meat on September 13, 2009. She lapsed into a coma and died on September 18, 2009.

Kwang Soo Kim, 64, the owner of the store, was charged in May 2010. But the main witness left the country so prosecutors withdrew the case.
