Attawapiskat First Nation orders third-party manager to leave

The Attawapiskat First Nation of Ontario ordered a third-party manager that was hired by the Canadian government to leave the reserve on Monday.

Jacques Marion, from the accounting and consulting firm BDO Canada, and government officials showed up to the band offices but Chief Theresa Spence said they weren't welcome. "I told them to leave the community because we know that a third party will not work for us and it will do more damage," she told Postmedia News.

Marion left but remains in charge of the band's finances. He was appointed after the First Nation made an appeal through the media to address woeful housing conditions on the reserve.

"We stand with Chief Theresa Spence as the story of her community has unfolded in front of the whole nation,” Chief Shawn Atleo of the Assembly of First Nations said on Monday, the Canadian Press reported.
