Cobell Lawsuit & Settlement

DC Circuit set to hear first of challenges to Cobell settlement

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is set to hear an objection to the Indian trust fund lawsuit next Thursday, February 16.

The appeal was filed by Kimberly Craven, an outspoken critic of the settlement. She has not opted out of the $3.4 billion deal, which provides $1.412 billion to Indian beneficiaries and creates at $1.9 billion land consolidation program.

A second appeal will be heard May 15. The objectors are Mary Lee Johns, Carol Eve Good Bear and Charles Colombe.

The appeals will delay distribution of the settlement funds. It could be months before the DC Circuit issues a decision following the May hearing.
