IPR: Humanitarian award goes to Grand Traverse employee

"This year's Sara Hardy Humanitarian Award in Traverse City will go to a woman who has advocated for better foster care placements for American Indian children, Helen Cook.

Indian nations across the country have struggled for decades as an extraordinary number of Indian children are removed from home and often placed with white caregivers.

Cook, who works in family services for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, has helped the local tribe reverse that trend."
