Indian activists charged for anti-mining protests in Ecuador

At least 205 indigenous activists have been prosecuted for taking part in anti-mining protests against Ecuador President Rafael Correa.

Correa was elected in 2007 with the support of many indigenous voters. But they say he has turned his back on their communities as he pushes to develop the nation's copper, gold and other resources.

"After 40 years of oil drilling, the only things it's left are destruction of the forest and pollution. That's why we don't want large-scale mining," said Humberto Cholango, the president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities, told the Associated Press.

According to two groups, Correa's government has charged at least 205 indigenous activists since he took office in 2007. All but 16 have been cleared of wrongdoing and, of the remaining who still facing charges, none have been convicted.
