Moapa Band gets EPA hearing on power plant by reservation

The Moapa Band of Paiute Indians in Nevada continues to battle a coal-fired power plant next to the reservation.

Tribal members staged a 50-mile walk last month to raise awareness of pollution they say is coming from from NV Energy's coal-fired Reid Gardner power plant. Now they will show the Environmental Protection Agency how they are affected by the facility at a public hearing on the reservation today.

"It has to be us to go ahead and take that initiative to make sure that they understand what we're going through, and not to go ahead and just blow us off, so that way they can do what's best for the power industry," Chairman William Anderson told Public News Service.

The EPA is holding public hearings on NV Energy's proposal to address air emissions at the plant.
