Gladys Widdiss, Aquinnah Wampanoag elder, passes away at 97





Gladys A. Widdiss, an elder of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, died on Wednesday. She was 97.

Widdiss led her tribe from 1978 to 1987. Her tenure culminated with a land claim settlement and federal recognition.

Widiss, who also served as vice chair, remained active in tribal affairs. She was known as a skilled potter and keeper of the tribe's history.
