Keith Moore, Rosebud Sioux, leaving Bureau of Indian Education

Keith Moore, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, is leaving his post as the director of the Bureau of Indian Education.

Moore joined the Obama administration in May 2010. He will be leaving for a job back in his home state.

“Over the past two years, Keith has provided great leadership and direction for the Bureau of Indian Education, carrying forward President Obama’s programs to improve the lives and quality of education for American Indian and Alaska Native people,” Interior Secretary Salazar said in a press release. “He is a dedicated educational administrator and we thank him for his exceptional service to Indian Country and the Nation."

Moore will leave this month. BIE Chief of Staff Brian Drapeaux will serve as acting director until a permanent hire is made.

The BIE director post was vacant for almost three years before the Obama administration filled it.
