Native man walking across Canada to seek changes to Indian Act

Leo Baskatawang, from the Lac des Milles Lac First Nation, is walking across Canada to seek changes to the Indian Act and to raise awareness of Native issues.

Baskatawang, 33, started the March 4 Justice in British Columbia on April 23. He's walking with a copy of the Indian Act chained to his leg.

"There is alcoholism, disease, unemployment and these all stem from colonial policies and legislation, the Indian Act," Baskatawang told The Winnipeg Free Press.

Along with Ashley Bottle, 30, and a support team, Baskatawang walked through B.C. and Alberta and has made it to Manitoba. He plans to arrive in Ottawa on September 3.
