Winnemem Wintu Tribe meets with BIA over federal recognition

The Winnemem Wintu Tribe of California met with the Bureau of Indian Affairs on Wednesday to discuss federal recognition issues.

An adviser for the tribe said the meeting went well. And Virgil Akins, the BIA's superintendent, promised to help.

"Hopefully, this meeting today is the beginning of the end" of the tribe's struggle, Adkins told The Redding Record-Searchlight.

There are at least two other Wintu groups that are also seeking recognition. So far, they don't appear to be united.
