DOI issues consultation policy for Alaska Native corporations

The
Interior Department announced its consultation policy for Alaska Native corporations.
Congress authorized the creation of the corporations through the
Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 and has passed other laws that address corporations. As a result, DOI said it is required to consult with them on the same basis as federally recognized tribes.
“Interior respects the unique cultural traditions and values of Alaska Native people and the distinct relationship between the Alaska Native Corporations and the Federal Government,” Interior Secretary Salazar said in a press release. “The new framework ensures meaningful consultation so that corporation officials are at the table and engaged when it comes to the matters that affect them.”
Salazar will be in Alaska next week to meet with Alaska Native leaders and to discuss other Alaska issues.
