Sports: How Florida State University got the 'Seminoles' name

"Florida State University's nickname, the Seminoles, is one of the most identifiable yet controversial in college athletics.

Fans, students and alumni sense a strong connection to the nickname and community of Seminoles.

1. The Student Body's Choice
After the school returned to its co-educational status in 1947, the student body chose the nickname "Seminoles."

2. First Game as Seminoles
Played on Nov. 22, 1947, the Seminoles stepped on the field for the first time. They lost to Tennessee Tech 27-6.

3. They Were Some Names Not Chosen
Some of the names not chosen included Green Wave, Crimson Tide and Golden Tornado. At the time, Green Wave and Crimson Tide were nicknames of two Southeastern Conference schools, Tulane University and the University of Alabama, respectively. "
