Books: 'Living With American Indian Art' shows tribal fashions

"When one thinks of Jews and American Indians, fashion may not leap to mind as much as, say, Mel Brooks clad as a warrior chief in “Blazing Saddles.” But two new books find the exquisite and the offbeat in both these sartorial traditions. “The Jewish Wardrobe” (5 Continents Editions, $75) mines the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, yielding treasures like a century-old Tunisian silk waistcoat. Dating from the same period is a glass-beaded leather Sioux valise. It’s part of the former Hollywood executive Alan J. Hirschfield’s peerless Indian art collection, most of which was photographed for the first time in “Living With American Indian Art” (Gibbs Smith, $75). "
