Yvette Roubideaux: Indian Health Service gets budget boost

"During Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ recent visit with Tribal communities in South Dakota, the Argus Leader wrote that “If the federal government is sincere about helping make life better, it will need consistent follow-up, money and buy-in.” In fact, the Obama Administration has made it a top priority to work closely with tribal nations to improve the health of Native Americans.

The 2009 Recovery Act included a $500 million investment in the Indian Health Service that has helped build new health clinics and expand access to services. Since 2008, the Indian Health Service’s total budget has increased 29 percent, even at a time when federal spending has been frozen elsewhere."
