Oglala Sioux Tribe could see $6M in revenue from alcohol taxes

Legalizing alcohol on the Pine Ridge Reservation could bring in $6 million a year in tax revenues for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, according to one proponent.

James Big Boy, the chairman of the Tribal Law and Order Committee, is pushing the tribe to end its liquor prohibition. He believes it's time to keep money on the reservation instead of seeing it go to the border town of Whiteclay, Nebraska, where millions of cans of beer are sold every year.

The issue could go before tribal voters if the council approves a referendum.
