The council of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota will vote November 27 on a proposal to legalize alcohol on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

James “Toby” Big Boy, the chairman of the tribe's Law and Order Committee, expects the council to approve the proposal. He says alcohol sales will keep million of dollars on the reservation.

"Today, White Clay is taking advantage of our people," Big Boy told Indian Country Today, referring to a border town in Nebraska where reservation residents buy alcohol. To benefit our people we need to regain that revenue for ourselves,"

Big Boy believes liquor sales could generate at least $6 million for the tribe.
