FY2013 budget transfers Indian Arts and Crafts Board to BIA

The Department of the Interior Fiscal Year 2013 Budget proposes to transfer the Indian Arts and Crafts Board to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The IACB is currently part of the Office of the Secretary at the Interior Department. The BIA will gain nearly $1.3 million in funding if transfer goes through.

The budget does not say whether the IACB will fall under the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. If that's the case, the IACB may not be subject to Indian preference laws that apply to other programs at the BIA.

The IACB promotes Indian art and oversees the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, which bars the marketing of goods as "Indian" unless produced by a tribal member or a certified tribal artisan.
