The
Shinnecock Nation
in New York needs donations of generators, fuel and food after suffering through
Hurricane
Sandy.
The tribe declared an emergency and evacuated the reservation as the storm hit the East Coast. All power went out and there's been damage and flooding to homes.
"We are still assessing the situation, but for the most part, power need is what we need. We are going to be placing orders with local food banks for food, if we need it, and water,” Trustee Randy King said on a conference call organized by the
United South and Eastern
Tribes.
USET has been coordinating with the Shinnecock Nation and other tribes affected by the storm. The organization also has been working with the
Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"We know some of you are already getting the brunt of the storm. This will be a big slow system that is yet to tell us how bad and where all the impacts will be. Knowing that we have a lot of formal communication processes, we do want to re-emphasize role of our regional tribal liaisons to make sure that we’re not missing or we’re not hear what we need to know to support the response," FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said in a conference call, according to a
USET press release.
