About 30K in Arizona expected to benefit from Cobell payouts

About 30,000 people in Arizona are expected to benefit from the $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement, Cronkite News reports.

The settlement includes $1.412 billion in payments to individual Indians. Most beneficiaries will get $1,000 to settle historical accounting claims plus another $800 to address trust administration claims.

Some beneficiaries will receive additional funds for administration claims. The amount is based on the level of activity in a person's trust fund account.

The Obama administration has vowed to distribute the $1,000 historical accounting payments by the end of the year now that the U.S. Supreme Court has dismissed two appeals.

The trust administration payments will come at a later stage.
