USDA shuts down bear zoo on Eastern Cherokee Reservation

The Department of Agriculture has shut down a bear zoo operated by a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina.

The Chief Saunooke Bear Park was fined $20,000 for failing to provide adequate shelter, food and veterinary care for its animals, The Ashveille Citizen-Times reported. The facility's license has been suspended until it comes into compliance with federal law.

The USDA issued a complaint to Kole Clapsaddle, the park's owner, in June 2012, outlining the violations of federal law.
