County petition opposes Miccosukee Tribe land-into-trust bid

Miami-Dade County in Florida has submitted a petition with 1,351 signatures in opposition to a land-into-trust application from the Miccosukee Tribe.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's application for 229 acres in August 2012. Local residents say they weren't informed about the process.

“In the last 37 years, I have been actively involved in every aspect of the West Kendall community, particularly in the Kendale Lakes area, and was aware of every zoning issue,” resident Aster Mohamed, who helped collect the signatures, told The Kendall Gazette. “However, I had not heard about this application until a month ago.”

The site currently houses a golf course.
