Senate confirms Sally Jewell as leader of Interior Department

The Senate today confirmed Sally Jewell as the next Secretary of the Interior Department.

Jewell has served as the top executive at Recreational Equipment Inc.. Though she doesn't have much direct experience in Indian Country, she has vowed to make tribal issues a top priority.

“Sally Jewell has the brains, the experience and the drive to lead the Interior Department, and I’m glad my colleagues voted overwhelmingly to approve her nomination," Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

Jewell will succeed Ken Salazar, who held the post since the start of the Obama administration in January 2009.
