Oregon Senate passes bill to create Indian mascot exception

The Oregon Senate passed a bill that allows public schools to keep their Indian mascots as long as a tribe supports it.

Last year, the Oregon Board of Education voted 5-1 to prohibit schools from using Native American names, symbols or images as mascots. Affected schools were given until 2017 to make changes.

Senate Bill 215 allows schools to keep their mascots if they reach an agreement with the tribe closest to the school. The bill has been sent to the Oregon House.
