BIA approves land-into-trust application for Chukchansi Tribe

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved a land-into-trust application for the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians of California.

The 12.48 acres are contiguous to the reservation, The Fresno Bee reports. The tribe will be used for housing and economic development, Chairwoman Nancy Ayala said.

"We are blessed to complete what has been a prolonged and demanding process," Ayala said in a statement, the Bee reported. "Now that we have brought these original Chukchansi lands into trust, we will be better able to protect and honor these beautiful lands."
