County reconsiders stance on Ho-Chunk Nation land-into-trust

Supervisors in Shawano County, Wisconsin, might drop its opposition to the Ho-Chunk Nation land-into-trust application.

The tribe wants 44.39 acres taken into trust and offered a "generous" payment in lieu of property taxes, a supervisor said. But the county's official policy was to oppose all land-into-trust applications.

The policy has since been rescinded. However, the county's appeal to the land-into-trust application still pending with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

"How does it look to the other tribes when we constantly object to their land going into trust?" the county's administrative coordinator told The Shawano Leader.

Supervisors will meet on January 24 to consider a resolution to enter into negotiations with the tribe.
