Cherokee Nation in negotiations for motor vehicle compact

The Cherokee Nation is in negotiations with the state of Oklahoma to update its motor vehicle compact.

The tribe issues motor vehicle tags within its 14-county jurisdiction, with a portion of the revenue going to public schools within those counties. A new agreement could see the tribe expanding sales to members throughout Oklahoma.

"We feel confident that we will hammer out a compact within the very near future that is going to be extremely beneficial to Cherokee citizens," Cherokee Nation Attorney General Todd Hembree told The Cherokee Phoenix.

The tribe has sold more than $67.1 million in tags since 2002, the paper said.
