House Republicans promise Native American voter outreach

The National Republican Congressional Committee said it will reach out to Native American voters.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, and Rep. Markwayne Mullin, (R-Oklahoma), a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, will lead the effort. The pair are the only enrolled tribal members in Congress.

“We will be building out, further and deeper, into the minority communities,” Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon), the chairman of the NRCC, told reporters at the House Republican retreat, The Hill reported. “We recognize that Republicans have good answers; we just have bad communications, in many cases."

Mullin easily won election in November in a Congressional district that has the largest percentage of Native Americans in the country. However, he did not mention his tribal heritage on the campaign trail.
