Nebraska governor approves route for Keystone XL Pipeline

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) approved a new route for the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline.

Heineman wrote a letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying the pipeline will have "minimal environmental impacts" in the state. He also said concerns about water and potential oil spills have been addressed by the new route.

Farmers and ranchers were opposed to the pipeline because the earlier route passed close to the the Ogallala Aquifer. Tribes in neighboring South Dakota remain opposed.
