Schaghticoke group wants BIA to rule on recognition petition

The Schaghticoke Indian Tribe of Connecticut is asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to make a decision on its petition for federal recognition.

SIT filed the petition in 2001, according to the Office of Federal Acknowledgment. The group is separate from the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, whose bid was rejected by the BIA in 2005 and is now tied up in litigation.

SIT has been embroiled in a leadership dispute and the BIA said it won't move forward on the petition until the matter is resolved.
