Haliwa-Saponi Tribe denied property tax exemption for school

The Haliwa-Saponi Tribe of North Carolina was denied a property tax exemption due to its lack of federal recognition.

The tribe cited a 1677 treaty and recognition by the state government through an act of the Legislature. But the Halifax County Board of Equalization and Review said it wasn't bound by the treaty and that the state law doesn't recognize a tax exemption like other governments.

The tribe plans to use the property to expand its school. The property is valued at $77,500.
