BIA asked to intervene in Chukchansi Tribe leadership dispute

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is being asked to intervene in a leadership dispute within the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians of California.

Supervisors in Madera County want the BIA to resolve a dispute that has dragged on for nearly two years. They say tribal leaders seem to be unwilling to resolve the matter on their own.

The BIA has identified Nancy Ayala as the leader of the tribe. But Reggie Lewis, whom the BIA identified as vice chair, claims he is in charge.

A third faction, whom the BIA does not recognize, also claims control.
