Leaders of Navajo Nation won't be looking to end alcohol ban

Leaders of the Navajo Nation won't be looking to end the prohibition on alcohol on the reservation any time soon.

Alcoholism and bootlegging are prevalent on the reservation. But leaders say lifting the ban isn't the answer.

"Pouring fuel on the fire only makes it bigger," George Francis, a board member for Totah Behavioral Health in New Mexico, told The Farmington Daily Times. "In the long run, it will create a new cycle of drinking. We need to be careful and search for the root issue."

The only exception to the alcohol ban is the tribe's gaming facility in Arizona.
