The first same-sex couple was married under the laws of the Suquamish Tribe of Washington on Wednesday.

James Abler, a tribal member, married his partner Terry Johnson II in a ceremony on the reservation. A tribal court judge officiated.

“It’s our first same-sex marriage under our ordinance. It’s something to be proud of, to offer this to members of our community who have been productive and supportive," Chairman Leonard Forsman told The North Kitsap Herald.

The tribe recognized same-sex marriages in August 2011.
