County leader urges Washington team to consider name change

The top leader in Prince George's County, Maryland, where the Washington professional football team plays its home games, says the team should consider changing its name.

“For me, if it’s offending anyone ... I think you should consider changing the name,” County Executive Rushern L. Baker III told The Washington Post.

The team plays at FedEx Field in the county. Baker said changing the name likely wouldn't affect the local fan base.

Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D-Maryland), whose district includes much of the county, is a co-sponsor of H.R.1278, the Non-Disparagement of Native American Persons or Peoples in Trademark Registration Act. The bill would strip the team of its trademark protections but wouldn't prevent the team from continuing to use the name.
