Opinion: Native Americans deserve recognition for contributions

Writer calls attention to Native American Heritage Month:
Over the course of nearly 100 years, Americans, American Indians and others, diligently worked to permanently designate a special place on the calendar to reflect the contributions, achievements and sacrifices made by the original inhabitants, the American Indians and Alaska natives, according to the U.S. Department of Interior Indian Affairs.

This month symbolizes the culmination of nearly 10 decades of unity in encouraging national recognition of Native American day, week and now Native American month, recognized by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 and proclaimed by every president since.

According to The National Conference of State Legislatures, Kansas is listed as having four Federal and State recognized tribes: the Iowa Tribe (Kansas and Nebraska); Kickapoo Tribe of Indians of the Kickapoo Reservation in Kansas; Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation; and Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri (Kansas and Nebraska).

Federally recognized tribes are eligible for funding and services, but most importantly, they are recognized for their original commitment and native ties to America.
