Alabama Coushatta Chief Oscola Clayton Sylestine passes on

Oscola Clayton Sylestine, the elected chief of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, died on Thursday. He was 80.

Sylestine became lifetime chief in 1993. Prior to that, he served four terms on the council, including a stint as chairman.

“This truly is a sad occasion and day, not only for our tribe but for all tribal nations, the citizens of both the state of Texas and this great nation,” Chairman Kyle Williams said in a press release, Indian Country Today reported.
