Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation's land-into-trust plan questioned

Officials in Yolo County, California, want the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation to scale back its land-into-trust application.

The tribe only has about 259 acres in trust. The application would add more than 850 acres to its land base for housing, education, infrastructure and other purposes.

Local officials, however, don't think the tribe needs all the land. They have asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to conduct a more complex environmental review that will lengthen the land-into-trust process.

"This is a very early stage of this process. This is not a final decision for the agency," Kevin Bearquiver, the BIA's deputy regional director in Sacramento, told The San Luis Obispo Tribune.
