Oglala Sioux Tribe balks at asking price for Wounded Knee site

Leaders of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota say they are being pressured to buy the site where the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre took place.

Owner James Czywczynski is offering two 40-acre parcels to the tribe for $3.9 million. Yet the property was appraised at less than $7,000.

“I think it’s ridiculous that he’s putting a price on it like that,” Kevin Yellow Bird Steele, a council representative, told the Associated Press. “We need to come down to earth and be realistic. We’re not rich. We’re not a rich tribe.”

Craig Dillon, another council representative, said Czywczynski regularly approaches the tribe about buying the land. The original asking price was $1.3 million.

“I believe the tribe would be interested in it if it was fairly priced,” Dillon told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.
