Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe rebuts critics ahead of council vote

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts said it won't change its election procedures despite complaints from some voters

The tribe will be voting on Sunday to elect a chairman and other leaders. Some members contend the process is unfair but were denied a meeting with the council.

"The legal requirements provided in both are not negotiable," the tribe told The Cape Cod Times in a statement, referring to the tribe's constitution and its election ordinance.

A group of tribal members has filed suit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs in hopes of having their concerns addressed.
