AIM incident at South Dakota court took place 40 years ago

An American Indian Movement protest at a South Dakota courthouse 40 years ago this month helped propel the group to national prominence.

AIM came to the Custer County Courthouse on February 6, 1973, to call attention to the murder of an Indian man. The incident ended with the arrest of Russell Means, who died last year at the age of 72, and 26 others.

A couple of weeks later, AIM led the occupation of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
