Indian programs at Interior face $130M cut under sequester

Indian programs at the Interior Department face a $130 million cut under the federal budget sequester, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Monday.

The cuts will take place Friday unless lawmakers take action. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and other agencies at DOI will be forced to cut back essential program when that happens, Salazar warned.

“These are real impacts we’re looking at,” Salazar said on a conference call with members of the media, The New York Times reported.

In a letter to Congress, Salazar said Indian education and general assistance are among the programs that will take a big hit.
