Choctaw Nation looking to buy property for new development

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is looking to acquire some land for a new development.

The tribe wants to buy the South Side Business Development Center from the city of McAlester. Plans call for a community center, a wellness center, a food distribution center, independent elderly housing and a Head Start facility.

The tribe has set aside $4 million for the food distribution center, the wellness center and the Head Start. “It’s in the budget, ready to move forward,” Assistant Chief Gary Batton told the city council, The McAlester News-Capital reported.

The city council voted to enter into negotiations to sell the property to the tribe.
