President Obama names picks for EPA and Energy Department

President Barack Obama nominated two more people for his Cabinet on Monday.

Gina McCarthy was nominated to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. She currently serves as an assistant administrator at the agency.

Ernest J. Moniz was nominated to lead the Department of Energy. He's a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"So these two over here, they're going to be making sure that we're investing in American energy, that we're doing everything that we can to combat the threat of climate change, that we're going to be creating jobs and economic opportunity in the first place. They are going to be a great team. And these are some of my top priorities going forward," Obama said at the White House yesterday.

The announcement came as Obama held his first Cabinet meeting of his second term as president. "Obviously, we’ve got some familiar faces, we have some new faces, we have some familiar faces in new positions," he said, according to the transcript of his remarks.

One of the Cabinet members, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, will be stepping down sometime this month. His replacement, Sally Jewell, the chief executive officer of Recreational Equipment Inc., will go before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for her confirmation hearing on Thursday.
