Oglala Sioux Tribe hosts first Oceti Sakowin meeting in century

The Oglala Sioux Tribe hosted the first Oceti Sakowin meeting in over a century.

The Oceti Sakowin represents the seven council fires of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people. The council formed hundreds of years ago but last week's meeting marked its revival.

"This has been something the tribes have talked about for years," Oglala Sioux President Bryan Brewer told The Rapid City Journal. "It has always been a dream of our tribes, but it actually happened now. This is a historic event for us all to pull together again."

The next meeting takes place in April and will be hosted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
