Editorial: Lumbee Tribe renews long quest for federal recognition

The Fayetteville Observer supports federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina:
Deja vu alert: You've heard this story before. It's 125 years old. But it's new again.

The Lumbee Tribe will try once more to get full federal recognition - a quest that began in 1888.

The Lumbees have a unique case with real merit. Congress actually recognized the tribe in 1956, but arbitrarily denied it the financial benefits given to all other tribes. That is an injustice that should have been corrected long ago.
