Citizen Potawatomi Nation asks BIA to rule on land status

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma could regain ownership of the site of a former Indian school.

The nearly 20-acre site was deeded to Pottawatomie County in 1959 for "school or other public purposes.” The land was being used for a hospital -- up until last year -- so it appears the tribe has a strong case for reacquiring it.

"The Citizen Potawatomi Nation has submitted documentation, which, upon its face, appears to establish that the land subject to the 1959 deed is being used for commercial, non-public, purposes in violation of the terms and conditions of the deed," Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, said in a letter to the county that's been quoted by local media.

The tribe says it's willing to pay the county for the buildings that have been construction on the land.
