Quapaw Tribe expects long fight on trust management case

The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma is expecting its trust mismanagement lawsuit to be in court for at least three more years.

The tribe originally sued in 2002 and thought a settlement was near. But the Department of Justice backed out of negotiations, Chairman John Berrey said.

"It's unbelievable that they're even wanting to fight us, because it's a horrible history," Berrey told News on 6.

The tribe is seeking $175 million in damages for mismanagement of its land, natural resources and trust funds. The suit was filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
