Elders from Spirit Lake Nation call for removal of entire council

Elders of the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota are calling for the removal of the entire tribal council.

Elders met for about two hours yesterday, according to news reports. They talked about corruption among tribal leaders and the child abuse situation on the reservation.

“The people are fed up,” elder Erich Longie told The Grand Forks Herald. “This action is a way to send a message to the council that the people are getting close to the point of no return.”

The elders plan to discuss the next steps to take to remove the council, including new elections.
