Spirit Lake Nation voters oust incumbent vice chair in primary

Voters of the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota ousted vice chairman Duane Jackson in a primary on Tuesday, The Grand Forks Herald reports.

Jackson was not one of the top two vote getters to represent the Mission District, the paper said. Robert Littleghost and Mardel Lewis will face off in a May 6 runoff.

Clarice Brownshield and Leander “Russ” McDonald will face off to represent the Fort Totten District. Brownshield is the incumbent.

McDonald previously ran for chairman but lost to incumbent Roger Yankton Sr., who is facing criticism for his handling of tribal affairs. Tribal members voted to remove Yankton from office and named McDonald as chair, but both agreed that only a petition process can lead to the removal of the chairman.
