Fashion designer Patricia Michaels of Taos Pueblo cleared one last hurdle on the finale of Project Runway on Thursday night.

Michaels, who is the first Native American to appear on the show, and three other designers were given $10,000 to create a collection of 12 looks for New York Fashion Week. Show mentor Tim Gunn went to the reservation to check in on Michaels and was visibly moved after learning about her Taos Pueblo upbringing.

The show then moved back to New York City, where the final four were asked to select three looks for the runway. Michaels once again surprised the judges with her unique designs, which incorporated some traditional Pueblo elements.

Model Heidi Klum and designer Zac Posen were rooting for Michaels as they tried to convince a skeptical Nina Garcia, a fashion journalist. Based on the mini-collection, Michaels was one of three designers selected to present at New York Fashion Week.

The finale will air next Thursday.
